Courses are very popular and interested teachers are advised to book early.

This Workshop is open to Primary and Post Primary Teachers

Action for Life  – Teacher Training Workshop

The Irish Heart Foundation, the national charity fighting heart disease and stroke, is pleased to introduce you to our new teacher training workshop for Action for LifeAction for Life is supported by the Department of Education and Skills and the Health Service Executive.

Action for Life is a health related physical activity resource for primary schools designed to support teachers with the roll-out of their PE programme. There are four booklets, one for each of the four class levels; Junior & Senior Infants; First & Second Class; Third & Fourth Class; Fifth & Sixth Class. The resource reflects both the PE and SPHE curricula with a focus on the strands of athletics, dance and gymnastics.

Adaptations for those with differing abilities are included within the activities.

The teacher training is a 1.5 hour practical workshop that takes teachers through Action for Life and how it is delivered in the classroom in a fun and experiential way.  As part of the teacher training, the Irish Heart Foundation will provide your school with the following resources:

  • Action for Life set of manuals
  • 1 x Bizzy Break and 1 x Bizzy Break for Rainy Days
  • Let’s get active pocket planners
  • Beanbags

Date: Thursday, 6 April 2017

Time: 4.00 – 5.30 pm

Venue: Dublin West Education Centre

Cost: Free of charge

Trauma is catching: Supporting and teaching

the child with trauma and attachment difficulties:

Practical strategies for helping the child in care to learn

While this course is targeted at teachers and school leaders working with children in care, it will have practical relevance for all teachers of children exhibiting signs of stress, trauma and attachment difficulties.

Overall aims: To explore teachers’ understanding of the causes and effects of trauma and attachment difficulties in children.

To introduce an understanding of therapeutic care; teaching strategies and effective, positive relationship building.

Methodologies:  Collaborative learning,  powerpoint presentation; close observation and case study.

Course facilitator: Anne McCluskey is a Principal (currently on career break) of a DEIS primary school with more than 15 years’ experience in educational disadvantage.  She has been a foster carer for more than 12 years and is an active member of the Irish Foster Care Association.

Module 1: Trauma is catching: Why do children in care find it difficult to manage school life and what effect does that have on teaching and learning in the classroom? An exploration.

Overview of the care system in Ireland.

Task / learning assignment; Case study; identification of child, and teacher’s diary/ log.  (Private and confidential and no child will be identified within the group)

Module 2: Reflection and feedback from diary keeping (without identifiable records). Introduction of structures and strategies to work effectively with traumatised children.   Resources and recommendations for further learning.

It should be noted that this is an introductory course offered by a teacher and foster carer – not a therapist.  While supports and referral agencies will be identified, the course itself will not offer these.

School Finance  for School Secretaries & Treasurers

Learn how to use and computerise your school finances & manage School/BOM income and expenditure using an excel spreadsheet template

This course is aimed at School Secretaries  & BOM treasurers and demonstrates the use of a customised excel spreadsheet to manage school finances as follows:

  • Record income & monthly payments
  • Allocation of categories to track income and expenditure and ensure updated balances and running totals for all grants.
  • Allows for bank reconciliation on monthly and year end basis
  • Produces detailed financial reports for BOM meetings an for audit purposes.

 This course will also introduce participants to a web based facility www.schoolfinance.ie (based on excel spreadsheet) to allow for the tracking and managing of school finances for small and large schools.

 Participants should have basic computer skills (no prior expertise of excel is necessary).

 Dates:        Wednesdays : 22nd & 29th March
