An Introduction to Scratch Programming in the Classroom (PDST/Lero) Beginners/Basic – Primary/Post Primary
Scratch is a free application, developed by the MIT Media Lab, which allows users to create and share their own interactive stories, animations and games.It is easier to use than traditional programming languages as it consists of graphical blocks which snap together.This course, over 2 Saturdays enables teachers to use Scratch to support teaching and learning, both at primary and post primary level. Suitable for Primary and Post primary teachers.
The course was designed by PDST Technology in Education in collaboration with Lero.

Exploring the use of iPads in the Primary Classroom (Intermediate)
Building on the basic level course of the same name, this course will allow participants to further explore the use of tablet PCs (iPads in this instance) especially in the creation of multimedia teaching and learning content, including stories. Participants will also explore how tablets can be used as a teaching and learning tool, as well as the potential to collaborate in learning. This course also covers the range of accessibility functions available to facilitate inclusion of all pupils in classroom activity.
Module 1: Generating Literacy
This module focuses on creating content using a variety of media in a number of genres, including presentations, short movies, animations and structured story writing.
Module 2: Pupil Portfolios and Inclusion
This module covers two topics. The focus is on pupil portfolios and how teachers can go about managing pupils’ work (assignment, submission and giving feedback) using tablet PCs and the Edmodo app. In addition, some of the newer and more advanced accessibility functions of the tablet are explored.
Module 3: Assessment and Collaboration
The use of iPads for assessment and collaborative learning is the focus of this module.

Active Learning using iPads in the Post Primary Classroom (you must have your own/school iPad)
The course will enable participants to:
- Explore the use of iPads to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in the classroom
- Create teaching and learning resources using iPads to support literacy and numeracy development in the classroom
- Explore applications (apps) to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in literacy and numeracy.
Course Content
Note: Apps required for this course Participants are required to download the list of apps onto the device they will use for the duration of this course, before the course start date (Apps list will be sent on to participants prior to the course). The selected apps are generally available free of charge or at a minimal cost. It is strongly recommended that those with a cost attached are purchased and downloaded in order to get the most from the course. The course is divided into three modules
Module 1: Getting to know the iPad and some apps This module provides an introduction to using an iPad for novice users, covering navigation and in-built tools such as multi-gesture controls and the integrated camera. Participants learn how to access and use both pre-loaded and new apps. As well as learning about their practical uses, the apps are critically analysed in the context of active learning methodologies.
Module 2: Generating content for literacy and numeracy This module covers how to create your own teaching resources for literacy and numeracy. It includes maths trails and ways to use iPads/apps for open-ended investigation (problem solving).
Module 3: Literacy apps and bringing our stories to life This module focuses on apps that can be used to support literacy in the context of key topics to include reading, writing, oral language, vocabulary and spelling. There is a particular focus on the multimedia presentation of stories in this module, such as comics; animations, presentations and short movies.
